Muhan Soysal has a lot of stories which prove his leadership qualities. Today, I will talk about these stories. Some of them are related to punctuality, look at different perspective, importance of practice and technology so on.
Firstly, I have to say that Muhan Hoca established the first real PC lab at METU in the METU BA Department building. Moreover, computer engineering building didn't have PC lab which is as technological as lab of BA at that time. He taugh significance of knowing how to use computer his student with "Yoğurt Kabından Bozma" computers.
Other technological application was taking photo all his students and take the attendance with using these photos.
He gave lots of life lessons to students. For example; he tought about dancing tango at all lectures of strategic management. Students took notes in these theoretical class for exam. After 1 month, he collected all students in one class and he said "Let's do Tango!" However, even if students know how to do Tango on a theoretical way, any BA students couldn't dance. Therefore, he proved significance of practice.
Some stories are related to exam questions of him. He asked one exam "Why?". Yes, it was question and he gave full point to his student who write "Why no?". Another story is that Muhan Hoca asked on the exam "What is risk?" and he gave permission go to library and a lot of time to source. However, answer was really easy: "That is risk."
Story of looking different perspective is that one day Muhan Hoca came to class with Picasso's picture, and picture was drawn with surrealism. Therefore, it was not clear. After that, he showed Meninas's picture which is clear version of Picasso's picture and he said that "Nothing is clear. Therefore, you should see what blurred means, in the business life."
Finally, I want to tell you one memory of Muhan Soysal. He thougth always about finding a new donation for our deparment BA. One day, he went to Vakıfbank and found İsmet Alver who was not only graduated at METU BA but also manager of Vakıfbank. He asked İsmet Alver:
-İsmetcim, I thought that if we put some chairs and tables on the coridor of our department, students don't have to go libraries in the snow or cold weather. Therefore, we need some donation."
İsmet Alver said,
-My surname is Alver, Muhancım. I cannot give anything before I take something.
Muhan Hoca has already prepared that,
-İsmetcim, remember my surname. Before I rob you and then I let you out!
After this conversation, Muhan Hoca took what he wanted. Nowadays, I always study at these chairs and tables instead of going to libraries. I'm grateful to Muhan Hoca so much. He is one of my idols. If I had chance, I would have like to meet him.
